JUST MATERIALS Research Infrastructure

JUST Materials supports circular economy by merging two fully operational National Research Infrastructures: BIOECONMY RI and RAMI RI. It builds on the inevitable need of all crucial raw materials – biobased renewables, inorganic materials and minerals from primary and secondary sources as well as recyclable end-of-life fossil-based materials – to ensure and secure the demands for innovative and sustainable materials engineering.

JUST Materials Research Infrastructure (RI) hosted by Aalto, VTT, GTK and LUKE is a research, education, and innovation environment with the target to ensure the justified use of raw materials from primary and secondary sources in environmentally, economically, and societally accepted fashion promoting sustainable competitiveness of Finland. Global resource scarcitycriticality, and supply disruption due to material shortfalls or geopolitical instability are driving our efforts towards an inclusive, multi-materials circular economy.  JUST Materials RI strives for circular economy based on minimal-waste principles with the vision to strengthen and merge Finland’s long-term core scientific expertise in biobased and inorganic materials research, and thereby position Finland among the world leaders to address the smart utilization of raw materials for high-performance value-added applications.

Research Infrastructures Access

The JUST RI facilities, resources and services are open for internal and external users via the respective host organizations’ booking systems, through joint projects or against service fees, via the respective host organizations’ contacts.

Examples of Research and Education supported by JUST Materials RI

FinnCeres

FinnCERES is a competence centre, jointly formed by Aalto University and VTT in the area of materials bioeconomy.

BatCircle

Managed by Aalto University, the Finland-based circular ecosystem of battery metals consortium (BATCircle in short) aims at improving the manufacturing processes of mining industry, metals industry and battery chemicals, and to increase the recycling of lithium-ion batteries. Its goal is to strengthen the cooperation between companies and research organizations in Finland.

CIMANET Doctoral Education Network

Circular Materials Bioeconomy Network (CIMANET) is an interdisciplinary doctoral education network to promote sustainable growth. It strengthens the knowledge base required to enhance the bio-based industry with novel solutions unveiling the full potential of biomass.
